Float Switches

Float switches are useful for maintaining the water level in sumps and aquariums. Simply wire the float switch to a small power head or dosing pump and place in the tank at the water level you wish to maintain. The switch can be operated as either normally on or normally off (the float is flipped to reverse the configuration). It includes an acrylic bracket and two large suction cups for easy and secure mounting. A four foot insulated wire with bare ends runs from the float switch.

Aquarium float switch for DIY projects.

Other uses for float switches include:

  • To prevent pumps from running dry
Operated as "normally on" position, the switch turns off the pump when the water falls under a certain level
  • As emergency flood sensors
operated in the "normally off" position, the switch can be hooked up to sound an alarm when the water level gets too high

Specifications:

  • Material - Polypropylene (does not corrode in fresh or saltwater)
  • Max Volatage - 270 volts AC (!!!see caution below!!!)
  • Max Current - 0.7 amps (@270 volts)

CAUTION: Mixing electricity and water can be DEADLY! While the float switch can be used to switch either AC or DC power, we strongly suggest only attaching it to DC power. For AC circuits, some form of isolation should be used (such as a relay or optoisolator) to prevent AC current from electrocuting you and/or your fish!
